The Facts and Features of a Cordless Jigsaw

Uses

A cordless jigsaw can cross-cut, bevel, miter and make curved cuts and patterns in a variety of materials such as wood, PVC, aluminium and even concrete boards. Different blades are required depending on the material to be cut. Cordless jigsaws excel at cutting through thin materials but have limitations cutting through material thicker than 1 ½” as the saw overheats and the blade does not cut properly.

Power and speed

The blade moves up and down about ¾” - 1” per stroke. Most models offer orbital action which pushes the blade forward on the upstroke allowing for quicker rough cuts, though this is not always a necessary feature, especially for intricate work. A variable speed option also allows the operator greater control over cuts and most can run between 500 and 3000 spm.

Cordless jigsaws range in power from 12v-28v, though it is not always necessary to buy the most powerful saw, but the one that best suits the work you will be using it for.

Blades

Most cordless jigsaws have a bevelling capacity of 45 degrees to the right or left. For straight cuts, a good blade guide is essential as jigsaw blades tend to veer off course. It is best to chose models with adequate blade support from the side as well as behind to help keep the blade on track and minimize bending. To improve the visibility of the line of cut, many cordless jigsaws also offer a dust-blower. Jigsaw blades are not expensive and it is best for the saw and your work to ensure the blade is always sharp. It is important not to force the blade and not turn too quickly as this can cause the blade to become stuck or snap off. Most modern models offer tool-free blade change through a spring-loaded mechanism. A cordless jigsaw that unlocks and ejects the blade is best.

Handle design

A cordless jigsaw can either have a top handle or a barrel grip design. The top handle design is preferred as it gives greater control which is vitally important for the saw to feel comfortable and stable and make quality cuts.

Maintenance

To enhance performance and lifespan, your cordless jigsaw should ideally be cleaned after use. These saws become very dusty and debris can force the blade out of position. For smooth and accurate cutting it is necessary to use a fine brush to clean the blade guide and clamp mechanism. The shoe also needs to be sandpapered so it is free of sharp edges which could mar your work piece. A plastic cover can be fitted over the shoe to protect finished surfaces.

Safety

Even though a cordless jigsaw is a relatively safe and user-friendly tool, it is essential to always wear protective eye wear and it is advisable to wear protective gloves as well.
